Against a background of disastrous famine in Bengal and political stalemate in India, General Slim launched the campaign to recapture Burma from the Japanese and placed the 25th Dragoons in the forefront.

The Regiment and its 80 Lee/Grant tanks travelled secretly to Calcutta, embarked on landing craft and drove ashore in darkness near the Indo-Burmese border.
